Several years ago I surprised Peggy with a Valentine’s day
gift of a boxed set of stereoscope slides of the Holy Land…I know what you’re
thinking….that’s setting the bar REALLY high when it comes to romantic gifts
for your wife. It was the same year she gifted me a tattoo on my arm….but that’s
a whole ‘nother story. For those of you who are unfamiliar, stereoscope slides
where the state of the art for entertainment in the late 1800’s. After months
of searching I found what I believe to be the only completely intact box of 100
stereoscope slides all taken in the Holy Land at the turn of the century. I
convinced the owner to offer it on Ebay and after some very tense moments I was
the winning bidder. These photos are an amazing glimpse into the history of the
Holy Land.
This is a scan of one of the stereoscope slides showing the
baptism site of Jesus. This is the same place we will be visiting in just a few
days. The explanation with the photo says that one of the Arab men needed to be
bribed to provide “protection” from members of his own tribe.
The site we visit is called Qasr el Yahud and It is the
western part of the traditional site of the baptism of Jesus by John the
Baptist (Matthew 3:13-17)
